Working in in heat can be severe at times. So severe that you would prefer to take a day off. But sometimes it is necessary. For instance, required maintenance at hot summer days or working in hot production environments.

Heat causes risks for the entire body. High ambient temperatures and strenuous efforts may cause your body to become overheated. This is known as heat stress. Normally, you would cool down by sweating, but protective clothing and PPE cause additional heating up.

Consequences

Heat stress starts as a little nuisance, but it could rapidly escalate. Are you detecting one of the symptoms below? Take precautions at once!

  • Loss of concentration
  • Cramp
  • Rash
  • Severe thirst
  • Fainting
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Stroke

Loss of concentration often results in errors, which makes the work even more unsafe!

Measures

The quick win is to create more ventilation. This will provide fresh air, which can also absorb moist. It may cause the sweat to vaporise, cooling down your skin. If heat is inevitable, the employer must:

  • Reduce the duration of the work activities in the heat;
  • Alternate work activities with work in a cooler environment;
  • Offer cool drinks.

Personal protection

 In addition to the primary steps in the AH-strategy, PPE usually remains required. Relevant products that we can provide, are:

  • Cooling vests
  • Cooling products
  • Workwear with better ventilation
  • Head covering against the sun
